Virtual experiments and alternative formulations for effective solution of inverse scattering problems

Dr. Lorenzo Crocco , the Institute for the Electromagnetic Sensing of the Environment, National Research Council of Italy (IREA-CNR), Italy

Tutorial length: 1 hour

Description: Electromagnetic inverse scattering problems are one of the most exciting topics in applied electromagnetics, due to the broad range of applications in which they are involved and the methodological challenges they pose. In this tutorial, an overview of the difficulties inherent to the non-linear and ill-posed nature of the inverse scattering problems will be given first. Then, some recent results aiming at addressing the challenges posed by the non-linearity will be reviewed. The focus will be on the use of alternative formulations of the basic equations and on the virtual experiments framework, which allow to deal with “simpler” problems by means of simple – but tailored - manipulations of the scattering equations and of the data, respectively.
